FLOATING ISLAND - Human impacts on the Ecosystem

What the oncoming age is bringing to us with it – new and more problems or cloudless futures? Will the man be able by powers of his wisdom, decree and will to protect himself and our planet at large from the many imminent threats?
Russian professor V.I. Vernadski set forth the idea of the role of the rational human activities in natural environments to avoid the consequences. Contexts of current consolidating global problems and specifically of ecological developments of today addressed a close attention of many researchers and scholars to the science and theory o Vernadski  in quest for answers from the founder of the materialistic concept of the noosphere to questions on the place of the man in nature and biosphere, on the future of the biosphere and interaction of the society and nature, destinies of the world civilization and humankind at large.
One of the attributes of the creation on the noosphere, therefore, will become the elimination of the threat of global-scale ecological crises. Principal prerequisites for the human kind are the ways of convergence and binding up of material and spiritual powers of the humankind and of the comprehensive community of the world for the scope to secure the boundless progressive development thereof.
Processes outside control of the human kind, dangers of wars, barbaric use of resources and pollution of the environment consolidate a serious problem of the ecological crises.

We proceed from a number of investigations and evaluations of our technology fast wall “Castwall” to offer methods to build roads, airfields on permafrost in the Extreme North areas. Process principle: thermotechnical fracture of ambient media.
“Al-Zer Ltd.” offers a method to solve the impending problem of ecological refugees. We refer to evaluations and experiments performed and to engineering analyses at hand to advance an alternative project the “Floating Island”; project designer – Anvar A. Makhmudov; research adviser -  professor, PhD (technical science) Vitali G. Nazarenko; architectural design manager – Sergei D. Nepomnyaschi. Project the “Floating Island” is offered to oppose the Belgium project by architect Vincent Calbau.

The project “Floating Island” is not a science fiction idea but rather a more serious approach to calculations made by scientists from the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences.  The International Scientific Committee of the Arctic Regions reports that the thickness of the ice cover at the North Pole area has reduced within the past three decades twice. The level of the world ocean providing things go on the same way will by the turn of the century be raised 1 m and, as Greenland and the Arctic regions are stripped of ice, the elevation will be several meters. Additional 6 degrees Centigrade will be sufficient to raise the ocean 88 cm more and Australia, Holland, Japan with coastal areas of Egypt and China alike would go under the water.
The result would be 250 million of ecological refugees. Evaluations of Russian scientists reveal: Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Rome, Madrid would find themselves on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean even before the end of the century. Their fate would be shared by Washington, New-York, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
The bed of the Pacific Ocean would be the new site for San-Francisco and Los-Angeles followed by Vladivostok, Magadan, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski. The flooded Amazonia would wash away Rio-de- Janeiro while the Parana would flood Buenos Aires. The Bahamas and the Maldives would be no more. Lovers of Russian landscapes are informed by the scientists that the Baltic Sea waves would come above Saint Petersburg while West Siberian plains would be transformed into a sea. The Azov and the Black Seas would jointly take up to merge with the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus would be found on the coast opposite to Russia.
Swelled waters of the Tsimlyansk reservoir would inundate the Rostov, Astrakhan, Volgograd provinces and the Stavropol territory in Russia. The above at large may be assumed as a minor lyrical introduction. The represented “Floating Island” project may be a version of an alternative solution of the problem.

A number of countries or individual authors may in short time introduce architectural projects. A practical implementation of such projects will be the economic component and the technological section at the level of designing, adjustment of the scope of works as well as harmonizing the issue of process and technologies intensity of the project viable and effective at the time of commissioning.

Floating Island will be a man-made structure developed on the basis of the Innovation Technology of the building and construction system “Castwall”. The concept of the development of the “Floating Islands” project relied on over 47 research developments in technologies, construction materials and know-how of Russian and Foreign scientists. The buoyancy of island is provided by properties of new type watertight low density construction concrete grades which display high water-repelling performance. The structure has five levels of protection from possible penetrations of water to secure the reliability of the floating structure and its safety.

The technology intensiveness and equipment “Floating Islands” allow providing for a complete closed-loop life support of an island and inhabitants by means of:

  1. Use of the energy of sea waves, high and low tides;
  2. Coast protection i.e. breakwaters used to generate power;
  3. Use of solar energy;
  4. Production of sweat potable water from the atmosphere;
  5. Water treatment and sewage works;
  6. Agricultural facilities;
  7. Research and development center.

The scope application and designation of the island:

  1. Development of cities, civil engineering and complete infrastructure;
  2. Marine terminals and piers, pontoons and buoyant tanks;
  3. Runways and landing facilities for short and long range aircrafts;
  4. Helicopter decks;
  5. Submarine connecting hubs;
  6. Offshore drilling and oil production rigs;
  7. Floating Research and Development laboratories, etc.

The use and application of this project feature many capabilities. Such facilities are oriented strategically or have civilian designation.
